Earl Kenneth Hines, universally known as Earl ‘Fatha' Hines, was an American jazz pianist and bandleader. He was one of the most influential figures in the development of jazz piano and, according to one major source, is ‘one of a small number of pianists whose playing shaped the history of jazz'. This CD features an all too short recording (Tracks one thru six) that Earl Hines And His Esquire All Stars (Gene Redd, Dickie Wells, Morris Lane, Carl Pruitt and Edward Burns) made at the Club Hangover in San Francisco on the 20th of February, 1954. The other (bonus tracks) were recorded the same year in July, 1954 in Los Angeles, with the following musicians: Gene Redd, Leroy Harris, Dickie Wells, Jerome Richardson, Paul Binnings and Hank Milo. It is possibly not an over statement to say that Hines was one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time.
